Arrowhead Plant: How To Care For A Syngonium

I’ll be honest, I thought plant was ugly two weeks ago. Now, I have 7 different types. This goes to tell you, a plant really can change your mood, vibe, and spirit. The syngonium plant (Syngonium podophyllum) aka arrowhead resembles prehistoric days and adds tons of color and character to any home.

Native to the Americas, this plant is commonly growing in nature in a tons of places such as the west indies, Florida, and Hawaii. Younger plants are bushy and full and as they mature, they begin to climb and become vine like. You can prune back to keep it bushy or explore its climbing habits on a trellis. In addition to it’s layers of characteristics, it foliage can range from variegated, cream, pink, green, white, to purple.  It is toxic to humans and fur babies so refrain for ingesting it. On the flip side, its a great air purifier!

Syngonium Plant Care Requirements:

Water

Water when the soil surface starts to dry. This plant likes to be on the moist side, but not wet or soggy. My arrowhead plant is about 4 feet from an east facing window (pretty sunny) and watering weekly does the job.

Soil

These plants enjoy a rich organic mix of soil. Many recommend using an african violet soil mix. You can use a potting soil that is rich in fertilizer.

Light

This plant can tolerate shaded light, but the more variegated and splashes of color, the more light required. It’s best to place indirect light.

Propagation

You can propagate by taking a cutting (right below a node – typically located below where a new leaf grows from) or by plant division.

Pest

Spider mites are the most common pest found on arrowhead. Here is a short regimen to get rid of them.
