Unfortunately sometimes our living space may make us feel like gardening is impossible. This is so far from the truth. Actually, We are here to let you know it is not a major factor at all! Little to no options for outdoor gardening only forces you to explore creative ways to enjoy growing a kitchen garden indoors.
The options for growing indoors are no where as limited as you may think. There are so many vegetables that thrive in containers indoor or out, that not only you can start growing right now- you can grow ALL year long. Here is what you need to consider.
Space
An indoor garden can take up as much or as little space as you are willing to allow it. Gardens can be limited to just a window sill or an entire room. Shelves are a great choice if you plan to grow more than most. Be mindful the shelves must receive adequate light so a grow light might be your go to route.
Light
Even plants grown near a window will probably not get enough light during the winter months to thrive. There are a few things to think about when purchasing a grow light. Its recommended that most plants recieve 12-14 hours of light.
Water
Plants grown in containers dry out more quickly than their soil-grown counterparts and require frequent watering. Always use room-temperature water and add enough water that it runs through the drain holes of your pot or container (do not let water collect in a saucer or under the plant â this can lead to rot or disease).
Herbs
These are ideal herbs to grow indoors. They require adequate lighting, similar water requirements, are great for beginner growers. Be mindful that oregano, thyme, and rosemary prefer drier soil than basil, and parsley. Mint also is invasive and would need to be trimmed regularly to keep from “choking” out the other herbs.
