Gardening is a great hobby to pick up if you like to learn something new about yourself, grow your own food, and/or just need to find a way to create “personal” time for yourself. No only learning how to start a garden can be empowering, it’s super easy to do!
Planning your garden is deciding the what, when, and where of your garden. What do you want to grow? This question will be the first step to start a garden that fits you. If you have a hard time answering this question, of course we can make it easier. Try answering these questions: Want to grow food to help cut down on veggie costs at home? Are you a tea drinker? Would you prefer to grow your own tea? Would you like to grow healing plants?
Once you chose your plant(s) of choice, where are you going to place this garden? I use containers in my small space as well as a tower garden. You want to kind of assess your potential gardening space and determine what might fit your living style right now, then move accordingly. If you’re unsure of your options, we talk about growing in small spaces here, you always have the option of starting off small with a plant or two in your front or back yard, and/or purchasing/building raised garden beds. The options are limitless, but be sure to choose what best fit your life!
To start a garden, you must be aware of the time of year. Luckily for you, we keep a cool link on the side of this article that you can enter your zip code, it will tell you what gardening zone you’re in. Once you know what zone you’re in, this article tells you around what month to start your garden! It even tells you what veggies you can start.  This is pretty much all you need to know when to start a garden.
This is the easy part. You can start a garden from seed (we teach you an easy method here) or purchase starter plants. There is not better way, it’s pretty much based on preference. Some times buying starter plants from large stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot require a little bit of awareness of what you’re purchasing to get the best for your money, but we wrote about that as well right here so you’re good!
Make sure you are learning everything you can learn about your new plant(s). Garden success comes from mastering gardening one step at a time. For example, I learned to take care of my very first mint plant by researching everything I can about it. I learn how much sunlight it prefers, how much water it needs, how to prune it, etc. Once you “master” that plant, you will naturally move on to others as well. I can also say that you’ll learn the most by actually getting your hands dirty (literally). So don’t be afraid to figure it out!
Not sure if you know it or not, but you’re basically a gardener now! Learning how to start a garden is easy, so get out and take advantage of limitless opportunities!
