How To Create A Succulent Garden

Succulent gardens are not only trending, but a great way to spruce up your living area. Since their uniqueness is unlimited, definitely want to gift you this easy guide on how to create a succulent garden.

Materials

Here are the supplies needed

• A bowl / planter of choice
  • Terrariums are a favorite here at BGWG – here are some we love!
  • If terrariums aren’t your thing, maybe you’ll like some of these chic planters
• Cactus potting mix
•  Succulents of your choice
• Gravel

Drainage & Add Soil

Creating drainage consist of two things to keep in mind: actual drainage holes & an effective drainage system. To prevent overwatering and rotting, add stones/gravel to the bottom of your container prior to adding soil. Drainage holes are another method for preventing overwatering and rotting, they are simply found in containers that have holes at the bottom for draining excess water.  If  Secondly, add soil to your chosen container. You want to measure the amount of soil based on the root length and depth of your plants.

Plant

Add your succulents of choice using your largest as your focal point. Your largest plant does not have to be centered, but you would wanted to plant it first to know what you’re working with. As with furniture, I would play around with placement before removing any plant from their container.

There are no boundary rules when you create a succulent garden simply because the “crowded” appearance is what gives your garden added character. Choose your favorite plants and position each in the container and adjust soil to cover all roots.

A simple way of adding the right amount of soil and plants is to first add a layer of soil. Second, remove your plant from its starter pot and loosen any excess dirt. Carve out a hollow hole in the soil and add your plant. Then, added soil to empty areas, making sure you even out the entire layer.

It’s, optional, but you can always add gravel or stones to the top layer to complete your succulent container.

Plant Care

Here are a few things to keep in mind to keep your succulent garden at it’s very best.

• Succulents do not require much water. Create a schedule and keep a close eye on your garden to know if changes need to be made. It’s recommended to water when the soil is completely dry, but that also is subjective on plant type, maturity, drainage, etc. You would water more often if you have drainage holes versus none.
• Succulents are indoor and outdoor friendly. In either conditions, they require plenty of sunlight, but they may burn so be extremely careful. Some long hours of indirect sunlight can do the trick.
