The Best Ways To Grow An Avocado Tree From Seed

Disclaimer, it can take anywhere from 8-20 years to grow an actually avocado on a tree you grew from seed. Professionals use a technique called grafting to produce the avocados we love and enjoy today. As an avocado lover, I was initially throwing away 10 pits weekly. Until, the young gardener in me decided that every seed I come across, I will try to grow something! Who can deny free seeds let alone free plants? So every since that day, I’ve been growing avocado trees indoors and outdoors for a few years now in a few different ways.

 

There is something so gratifying about watching a plant grow from seed and just like us, kids enjoy it just as much. It serve as a great project for classrooms and home.

Prep

Be mindful, growing an avocado tree requires patience, but it’s so worth it. One way to get started is placing your avocado seed in water. Firstly, wash your seed and allow it to dry for one to two days. Afterwards, identify the bottom and top of the seed. The top will have a slightly pointy tip versus the bottom where it would have more a flat surface.

 

Water

You may peel the outer layer (totally optional) off and stick a toothpick on each side of the avocado so it may suspend over a container.  Place the seed in the container and fill with water to cover the seed at the half way mark. Sit in a sunny window seal and watch for roots in the next 6-8 weeks. Replace water weekly.

Dark Corner

Prep the seed as normal and proceed to germinate see by placing it in a DAMP paper towel and place in a dark corner preferably in a cabinet.

 

Soil

Also, you can prep the seed as usual and place in soil with the tip uncovered. Water weekly and place in sunny area. This method works  really well outdoors.
