There are a plethora of garden bed types to choose from when you start growing your own food. The different types each have their own benefits, drawbacks, and reasons why they suit various growing spaces. Here are the 3 types we recommend beginners start with!
For this article, we will name all of the garden beds that we know work well and categorize them as either raised garden beds, container gardening, or flat earth gardening. Flat earth gardening consists of planting directly in the ground. Container gardening use portable above ground containers to grow. Raised garden beds are combination of container and flat earth gardening.
Raised Garden Beds
This option is best if soil is not the best at your home, if you’re renting, or you’re looking for an aesthetically pleasing gardening space. There are two types of raised beds:
- Elevated raised garden beds – These beds are “raised” to about hip height

Container Gardening
Smaller space, apartment living, and live in a zone that may require you to move your plants in during harsh weather.
